Foggy day…

I did an earlier run than usual this morning, and it was quite an unusal run.. It was so foggy I had difficulties seeing my route, but the view was quite something.. I had to stop a few times to take some pictures on my phone.

So about my run then; I managed 5,5k this morning, with 5 minute brisk walking to warm up and ending the run with 5 minutes warmdown. I use this app I’ve downloaded, a 5k to 10k app on my phone which is proving to be really great for me. The app has a 9 week program with three runs scheduled each week. I’m just about to hit the third week of using the app but it’s great for keeping me going when tiredness and boredom kicks in. It keeps you following a running plan, mixing fast runs with jogging. The purpose is to build up your stamina and fitness so you can manage a 10k. You can find the app here for Apple, and here for Android. I really recommend it!

Weekend recovery

It has so far been a relaxing weekend but as I have been away it has been tricky to keep with the healthy eating and exercising. Something to think about now that Christmas is around the corner, how to keep with the daily routine when you're on “holiday”. Although I stayed away from fastfood this weekend, last night we ended up having some Indian food which isn't always the healthiest choice. But I stayed clear of the carb-filled naan-bread and “only” went with the rice. The good thing is that there was a lot of walking involved this weekend, and I could feel during the long walks that my legs were tired after two good runs midweek. But the walking ended up helping those niggles I have been feeling, muscles seem more relaxed now!

Just thought I'd give a little tip to anyone doing a marathon next year.. I bought Runner's World (UK edition) yesterday and they have a great marathon guide in the most recent issue. Some of the tips are also valuable to us doing 5k or 10k races, specially some good advice on the psychological bit of how to run longer distances. That's the kind of stuff I need, as the motivation bit is always the toughest part for me!

First step to 10k…

I started this day with a mega delicious breakfast, some plain soya yoghurt with Jordan’s Countrycrisp with strawberries and added fresh organic blueberries on top.

I have my third ever 10k race on the 1st February.. so that’s 1,5 month away and maybe it’s bad timing to start training for this just before Christmas, but I decided to brave the weather today. It was VERY windy today so I decided it wasn’t ideal to do a run next to the river. I went for a nice steady run on the pavement.. and I could definitely feel I hadn’t done this for a while! I managed 4k on the pavement in a nice steady pace – but I did feel shattered afterwards. I even tried my new Polar FT2 heart rate monitor/watch – however I am not sure I used it correctly.. my heart rate seem to change a lot during the run and I reached 180 at one point, which I am sure must be wrong??

I’m glad I’m back in the game now though, just need to keep this up… I’m sure it will be difficult to keep the motivation during the Christmas period but I will definitely give it a try!
